Hanping Chinese Dictionary Pro 3.3.0 released!

New Radicals lookup (access it through overflow menu at the top-right of the screen). If you want to enter a character and you know the radical then this new feature will help you. Radicals are grouped by stroke-count and sorted by frequency within each group. Click on the radical to get a list of all the characters that use that radical. Again, this list is grouped by stroke-count (actually, number of strokes not including the radical itself) and sorted by frequency within each group. Try long-pressing on radicals or characters to jump straight to the Browse screen
Handwriting screen now shows history of characters instead of the old gPen logo. The most recent character is shown on the right hand side. You can long press on these characters to bring them up in the Browse screen
Added Google Image search and HanziCraft to the external links dialog

Fixed rare handwriting crash & made some handwriting UI tweaks – now, instead of pressing the “left” arrow icon in the bottom-left corner, you press the tick icon in the bottom-right corner, to take you to the search results
Generate vocab sheet from starred list – this allows you to share a starred list as text using Android’s powerful Share feature. To access this feature, go to the Starred tab on the main Search screen and long-press on one of the starred lists
Some new Hanzi colorings – introducing the brand new “hanping” coloring! This coloring uses the same beautiful colors as “dummit” but assigns them to the tones in a different way. We’ve also added “speccy” coloring inspired by the old ZX Spectrum. The “hanping” coloring is:
- Tone 1 (high, flat tone) – blue – think of a flat blue lake, or a blue sky
- Tone 2 (rising tone) – green – think of green grass growing!
- Tone 3 (low, falling-rising tone) – orange – (we chose this one for aesthetic reasons)
- Tone 4 (falling tone) – red – think of someone giving an angry command
UI tweaks for large screens – some icons are a little more spaced out and some text sizes are increased a little

Now that we have recently released a brand new free version of Android’s most popular Chinese dictionary, the old free app has been renamed to Hanping Chinese Classic.

If your Android device is running Gingerbread 2.3 (or higher) you will most probably want to install the new Hanping Chinese Dictionary Lite app (and uninstall this Classic app if necessary). You can also keep both apps installed at the same time, if you wish. But it is probably a good idea to close (Force Stop) one app before opening the other.

Changes in this update:

Google Play will no longer show this Classic app for devices running Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0) or higher. If you prefer this app to the new Lite app and are running Ice Cream Sandwich or higher, then you can still use it by downloading it here

This is a bugfix release on the beta version released earlier this year.

Some old Gingerbread devices (predominantly Samsung ones) were showing the Live view sideways. This is now fixed, but if you are still having problems see the Compatibility section of the Settings screen to control it

Hanping Chinese Dictionary Pro 3.2.8 released!

Better navigation – in older versions of Hanping, it could take many Back-presses to go back through all the dictionary entries to get to the Search screen. Long-pressing the Back button has always been the fast-track way to do this. However, hacking the Back button in this way goes against Android standards, so now we have replaced this with a simple click on the top-left app icon. So, if ever you want to go “up” from the Browse screen to the Search screen, simply press the top-left app icon.
Improved 中文/English dictionary switching – for those of you with the ABC English-to-Chinese Dictionary installed there is now a better way to switch between Chinese and English headwords (when searching English words only). Replacing the recently-introduced 中文/English sub tab, there is now a discrete button which overlays the search results in the top-right corner. This has two main advantages:
- Takes up much less screen real estate – especially important in landscape mode
- The button is available even if you have scrolled down through the results – so no need to scroll to the top of the search results just to do the switch

Starred/tag lists are now merged across languages – also only applicable to those with the ABC English-to-Chinese Dictionary installed. Let’s suppose you have the tag “food” and you have tagged both Chinese words and English words with this tag. Now, when you click on the “food” tag list, you will see a button in the top-left corner allowing you to switch between viewing the English words tagged “food” and the Chinese words tagged “food”
